Calvert Foundation's investment approach provides a "blended" return on investment – one that is both social and financial.
Increased Capital
We increase the flow of capital to underserved communities in three key ways:
- We create and sell financial products that allow investors to channel their capital directly to underserved communities. Our Calvert Community Investment Notes, GiftShares and Calvert Giving Fund enable us to raise capital from investment and philanthropic giving.
- We enable other institutions to direct community investment capital more easily. In addition to our regular portfolio, we provide a range of due diligence reports and other investment services for our Community Investment Partners, who channel millions of dollars in additional loan capital to underserved communities.
- We continue to grow awareness of community investing through information sharing and strategic partnerships. Partnerships with major foundations and corporations help drive individuals and resources to the community investment marketplace.
Our Strategy for Change
To improve the lives of the world’s poor, we invest in proven poverty alleviation methods, including affordable housing, microfinance and enterprise development. We strategically channel investor dollars to select nonprofit organizations with high potential for addressing pressing needs, in accordance with our "Theories of Change" Strategy (PDF 87 KB).
This strategy is based on four elements:
- A strong relationship with our portfolio organizations
- Activities of these organizations
- Outputs generated by their activities
- Resulting social impact
Calvert Foundation finances nonprofit organizations because we believe our investments can incrementally reduce poverty. Through addressing global poverty one community at a time, we create a positive and measurable impact for those in need.
