Civic Builders: Entrepreneurial Spirit Drives Solutions for Charter Schools
Civic Builders, a fellow 2007 Fast Company Social Capitalist Award winner, joined Calvert Foundation's Social Enterprise Portfolio in 2006. Civic Builders helps charter schools identify and purchase affordable property for constructing state-of-the-art schools. By focusing on school construction and property acquisition, Civic Builders allows educators to spend less time navigating the complexities of real estate acquisition and more time educating students living in some of New York’s most underserved neighborhoods. These schools give students who are frequently marginalized by the education system a safe and healthy environment in which to learn.

How are social enterprises generating social change?
Social Enterprises are revenue-generating ventures that produce tangible social and/or environmental benefits to society. While they can be either nonprofit or for-profit, social enterprises are motivated more by public and social good than personal profit. Social enterprises utilize market forces to address critical social problems, often by generating “double-” or “triple-bottom” line returns in the form of financial, social and environmental benefits. These businesses provide jobs as well as necessary services to underserved communities. Many of these ventures do this by growing the local economy through expansion of work-related activities and providing employment opportunities to individuals on the periphery of the labor market. One great example of a social enterprise that is generating revenue while producing tangible social returns is the Youth Program at Evergreen Lodge, in Yosemite National Park. This program employs high-potential young adults from urban backgrounds to work as seasonal interns, allowing them to learn specific skills but also live in a natural setting with a supportive group of peers and mentors that challenge, motivate and inspire them. Because the social focus of these types of organizations can be costly, affordable financing is needed to make these ventures possible. That's why Calvert Foundation launched the Social Enterprise Initiative. This allows us to fund these high-impact organizations, which are transforming the business landscape by pushing the traditional nonprofit mindset toward a more creative way of thinking about revenue generation and financial support.
